8. Finite Difference Wigner Function Method

The Wigner equation is a widely used approach to quantum device simulation. The formalism combines description on a rigorous quantum-kinetic level with the classical concepts for phase space and open boundary conditions.

This chapter discusses Frensley's approach [Fre90] to the discretization of the Wigner equation using finite differences. We show that the use of an equidistant product grid is necessary for a discretization which conserves mass.
