TU Wien is a research university, which sets the highest standards in knowledge transfer according to the three-pronged approach of research, training and innovation having as mission statement: “Technology for people”. It has over 4.800 employees, 30.000 students and 2.700 graduates each year which add value to society, provide impetus for the Austrian economy and serve to bring about progress as a whole. Research at TU Wien is focused on five focal areas: Computational Science and Engineering, Quantum Physics and Quantum Technologies, Materials and Matter, Information and Communication Technology, and Energy and Environment. These five pillars represent strengths and skills of TU Wien going back many years, and they strengthen its profile in international relations.
Institute for Microelectronics was founded in 1986 with a primary focus on the modeling and simulation of semiconductor devices and processes. For about ten years, considerable know-how has been built up regarding the modeling of defects and device reliability in general. Since 2012, experimental facilities have been set up at the Institute for Microelectronics to satisfy the growing need for more intricate experiments which could challenge the increasingly complex model development. As of today, the Institute for Microelectronics operates two semi-automatic probe stations, three cryogenic probe stations and five high temperature setups using computer controlled furnaces, as well as standard SMUs in a 125m2 area laboratory. Furthermore, the Institute has developed specialized custom-made equipment, called Defect Probing Instrument, aimed at overcoming the most serious limitations that have been encountered with standard SMUs. The comprehensive know-how and detailed expertise is reflected in many successful collaborations with many industrial partners, numerous European and national funded projects related to modeling of defects in semiconductors, and various best paper awards.

Global TCAD Solutions was founded as a spin-off company of TU Wien. Its mission is to close the gap between cutting-edge scientific developments and industrial needs in semiconductor device engineering. As former members of the Institute for Microelectronics, the founders maintain a tight cooperation with the institute. Thus, they rely on a strong scientific background, especially focused on latest developments in reliability modeling and quantum transport. GTS offers individual TCAD solutions based on the latest scientific research. Their customers benefit from a full range of products and services, including software licensing, customization of simulation products to special needs or implementation of bespoke software, versatile TCAD tools embedded in an easy-to-use and powerful framework tailored to the daily needs of device engineers.
Infineon Technologies Austria AG provides semiconductor and system solutions for energy efficiency, mobility and security to address three central needs of our modern society. The company develops and produces automotive and power semiconductor devices and holds top positions in these markets. Within Infineon, Villach based Infineon Technology Austria AG is the key innovation site for power device manufacturing and development. In particular, Villach holds the research and development on wide-bandgap semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) for high performance power devices. Infineon offers a broad portfolio of SiC based power devices like Schottky diodes and JFETs. In 2016, Infineon has introduced the CoolSiC TM 1200V MOSFET which represents Infineon’s leading-edge solution to bring current designs towards new unattainable efficiency- and power density levels.
In Christian Doppler Laboratories, application-oriented basic research is pursued at a high level, and expert scientists cooperate with innovative companies. The Christian Doppler Research Association is an international best practice example for promoting this collaboration. Christian Doppler Laboratories are financed jointly by the public purse and the participating companies. The most important public sponsor is the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDW).
